The local target archery clubs, Wight Bowmen and West Wight Archery Club are based in Appley and Newport and between them the clubs currently have around 120 members, some of whom compete but many who enjoy the sport for pleasure. Wight Bowmen recently secured a lottery grant enabling them to build a new clubhouse.
Past members of both clubs have achieved notable success on the national circuit and have had archers who have achieved Grand Master Bowmen status.
Wight Bowmen has successfully run the Vectis open indoor tournament which attracted 160 archers from all over the UK. In 1993 the two clubs hosted the Island Games at Wight Bowmen's Appley Field.
There is also a field archery club called Wight Company of Field Archers, meeting once a month in ancient woodland near Brading and Brocks Copse near Newport.
